Yoga Practices for Peri/Menopause

Sunday 11/24, 12:30-2:30pm

2nd Story Pilates & Yoga

During the three stages of menopause (peri-, menopause, post-), we face an array of symptoms. Hot flashes, loss of bone density, loss of flexibility and balance, and hormonal imbalances, just to name a few.

In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll use various yoga practices to help ease our transition into the next phase of our lives. We’ll work on strength, flexibility and balance through yin, vinyasa, pranayama, meditation and restorative poses, as well as a little strength training and cardio.

We’ll also come together as a group to support one another. We lose many things during the change, but we’ve also gained so much- wisdom, humor, perspective, patience and compassion. A celebration of who we are - and who we are becoming- during this stage of life will be an integral part of this workshop.

We will discuss anatomy, specifically fascia and muscle, as it relates to yin practice, and how to safely help guide students into and out of poses. We will also learn about 5 Element Theory, meridians and other energetic signatures of yin practice. Lastly, we’ll discuss sequencing and theming of yin yoga, as well as language and teaching cues and best practices. This training is open to 200hr TTs, those working on advanced (300+) training, as well as dedicated yin students (minimum year of practice).

2nd Story Pilates & Yoga

Fridays, 7:00-7:45am

SUNRISE VINYASA 45

Start your day with this invigorating, open level practice. Sunrise Yoga is designed to energize the body, deepen the breath, and warm you from the inside out. This 45 minute practice will get your day started off right! All are welcome!

Sundays, 8:30-9:30am

YIN

We don't use the body to get into the pose. We use the pose to get into the body. -Bernie Clark

Yin yoga is a complementary practice to our vinyasa or hatha practice. Instead of using our muscles, yin yoga asks us to get into our connective tissues- what holds our muscles and bones together. Poses are held for time to allow for a gradual release but yin should not be confused with restorative yoga. You’ll feel a lot! But this profound practice is suitable for all levels of practice, including absolute beginners.

We will use props in this class. For friends at home, if you have yoga blocks and a bolster, great! If you don’t, grab some bed pillows, and a few blankets or towels.

In studio & online.

Sundays, 9:45-10:45am

YOGA FOUNDATIONS

Learn what all the hype is about! This class is devoted to the newcomer who wants to build their practice from the ground up. Students will explore breath practices, standing sequences, seated poses, and an introduction to backbends. This class is ideal for those who are new to yoga or for anyone who wants to brush up on the basics. (Beginner Friendly)

In studio & online.

Suryaside

Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:00-8:00am

YIN

This class is particularly suited for those who seek a more flexible body and a quieter, calmer mind. It is more inward-drawn practice that utilizes long-held postures which target Yin parts of body; connective tissues, such as the fascia, ligaments, tendons, bones, and joints.

Postures are very simple, but for some it can be quite challenging due to the long period of time the poses are held, the stillness, and silence which require more awareness of the here and now.

In studio & online.

Sundays, 6:00-7:15pm

YINYASA

Yin yoga is a complementary practice to our vinyasa or hatha practice. Instead of using our muscles, yin yoga asks us to get into our fascia, or connective tissues- what holds our muscles and bones together. Poses are held for time to allow for a gradual release. Unlike restorative yoga, you might feel quite a lot of sensation but this practice is great for all practitioners. We'll end class with a brief but vigorous flow, moving from fascia back into muscle, to find the balance between yin and yang.

Sacred Space Astoria

Mondays, 6:30-7:30pm

LEVEL II VINYASA

This class is suitable for those practitioners with an existing practice who are able to flow through poses more quickly. While some alignment will be reviewed as a reminder, this level is not suitable for complete beginners and will not include demonstration of poses.
